SARS-CoV-2 infection in a pediatric patient with cystic fibrosis

Background Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a potentially mortal disease characterized by chronic pulmonary with persistent airway infection. Children this are more susceptible to respiratory infections due the limitation in mucociliary transport and anatomical disruption of bronchial tree. SARS-CoV-2 causes COVID-19, illness related exacerbations pathologies children, such as CF asthma. There not enough case reports on pediatric patients infection CF, for which we share our experience. Case report A 22-month-old male patient diagnosed presented hospital cough, fever, increased work. The received supplemental oxygen antibiotic antiviral therapy. Positive results type B influenza RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) were obtained. Due persistence difficulty, high-flow therapy was initiated, good response. After an episode hypoxemia, bradycardia, work secondary accumulated secretions, orotracheal intubation invasive mechanical ventilation performed. evolved clinical gasometric improvement. 10 days in-hospital management adequate evolution, discharged complete oral treatment home isolation. Conclusions We present severity criteria patient. evolution favorable timely support third-level hospital.
